Remote Working Part 1 – DIY Guide – Overview
Obviously not all of us is allowed to work remotely as there are some types of work that require employees to consistently attend their office or travel to perform their work face to face. But for those of us who are allowed to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share what I have learned and share some practical guidance by writing and publishing it on the Internet with the sole objective of providing valuable advice for adapting to remote working or supervising remote workers.
I must tell you you that there are many self proclaimed ‘gurus’ on the Internet who will try and get you to buy guides for significant sums of money, take my word for it you don’t need to do this.
I am lucky enough to be permitted to work wherever I choose and just about everybody who asks me what job I do wants to know how I am able to work remotely. Don’t get me wrong here I am still improving the art of remote working as each day I encounter people on the web who show me new tricks and I am repeatedly unearthing new packages and methods that make my life easier and improve my productivity.
In the past 7 years I have slowly but surely adapted my working processes to allow me to do the majority of my work remotely with a collection of web tools and solid self discipline. One day whilst surfing the web I came across Quickbooks online and this got me thinking about what just might be possible. The discovery of ’cloud’ based ‘on demand’ small business accounting software was a pivotal moment for me and the launch pad of my ‘remote working history.
I must state up front that successfully working remotely is as much about the systems as it is about self management. Working remotely also means getting across to your colleagues, supervisors and clients as to what they can expect and how they will communicate with you.
