Beginning writers often fail to sell their writing. Why is it that relatively few creative writers get published? Could it be that they don’t have the self-confidence to move forward to publication? Or could it be because they aren’t sure how to get published?
Every creative writer soars through the universe when they see their first byline. This is an exciting time for every writer. Seeing your work in print is one thing that doesn’t get old. Call it a pride thing, if you will. Maybe you think it is just an ego trip. Call it being self-centered, if you like. Call it anything you want. Published writers call it answering the call of opportunity.
So how do you get your work published? It isn’t that difficult. Finding the discipline to do it is the difficult part.
- Ask for a reporting position at your local newspaper. Local papers usually have difficulty in finding a reporter for sports events and social functions.
- In reality, it doesn’t matter much whether you get the job or not. There is another way to scheme your way into the newspaper. Look for accidents to report. Take pictures and interview people while you’re waiting for the mess to clear. (The paper will give you $5 extra for each picture they use.) Ask an officer who is in charge of the investigation. Go up to that officer with all the brass in your bones and tell him you are a stringer for _________ (name of local paper).Ask if you can talk to him when he has time. At that time, he will give you the names, ages, and perhaps addresses of those involved in the accident. These things are very time sensitive so deliver it to the newspaper as quickly as possible.
- Interview people who do weird things or have unusual hobbies. Hand deliver the article to the editor of your local newspaper.
- Keep money rolling by resubmitting articles with regional interest to local newspapers all over the United States. You can find a list of nationwide newspapers at the library. You can make hundreds of dollars by submitting the same article multiple times!
This is a super way to get your first clippings, and it doesn’t really take much talent. This is a super strategy for making quick money because the newspaper will pay on acceptance. Start reporting today!
